You probably know already whether you’re the audience for the show put on by the Cleveland Uncommon Sound Project, currently in residence at Convivium 33 in AsiaTown. But if you’ve got an adventurous streak and are open to sounds that aren’t organized in traditional “songs,” these shows are worth checking out. They feature some of the most respected soundmakers in the cutting edge improvisational/electroacoustic/free music scene.
Its upcoming show will be headlined by Binary Canary, featuring Ted Moore on electronics and Kyle Hutchins on saxophone performing a new work for sax, tape and video called saccades. The two sonic creators, each of whom has performed extensively on his own and with other experimental sound artists, have been working together since 2013 creating interactive multimedia pieces with both composed and free music. Moore has a PhD in music composition from the University of Chicago; Hutchins has premiered more than 200 new works for saxophone. At Convivium 33, they’ll also be performing some improvised sounds using audio feedback inside resonant metallic objects.
Opening the evening is the Skunk Wook Percussion Ensemble, two Cleveland-based drummers, Jayson Gerycz and J Guy McLaughlin, performing as a free improvisational duo since 2014 at various Cleveland events. Chicago-based drummer Ben Billington, whom they’ve collaborated with before, will be performing with them at this show.
Doors are at 7:30; showtime is 8pm. Recommended donation is $15 but CUSP emphasizes that they won’t turn anyone away because they can’t pay. Go here for more information.
