Talk About the Weather with Betsy Kling at the Music Box

Thu 3/21 @ 7PM

For some reason, TV weather reporters are referred to as meteorologists, although few have the actual scientific credentials and are in fact, mostly reporters of what meteorologists have found. Yet these reporters have a tendency to become broadcast stars in their markets. One of the best known, the legendary Dick Goddard, did work for the National Weather Service for a bit, but his background was in theater and broadcasting. Al Roker is another ex-Clevelander broadcast personality who rode weather reporting to stardom, whose Wikipedia entry accurately describes this profession as “weather presenter.” Maybe the main requirement is to stand outside in a blizzard without wearing a hat.

Anyway, Cleveland (and probably other cities too) loves these personalities such as Andre Bernier, Hollie Strano and Betsy Kling, who will be at the Music Box Supper Club to talk on the subject of “Who Can Explain Cleveland’s Weather?”  And if you drill down that’s what they do — they don’t forecast but they try to make clear to viewers what’s going on. But she’s more qualified than most: she has studied meteorology in addition to journalism.

The program, which is free, starts at 7pm, but come down early (doors are at 5) and have dinner (Make a reservation if you want to eat.) As usual, there’s a three-course fixed-price menu, but you can also order off the regular menu.
