Mark and Karen Langan opened Mulberry Creek Herb Farm on their farm in Huron back in 1995. Since then, it’s become the go-to place for growers across the region interested in organic farming, with its unmatched variety of herbs, miniature “fairy” plants and accessories, miniature fruit trees, cacti and succulents, and starter vegetable plants, as well as pottery, seeds, organic fertilizers, ice cream from Mitchell’s and eggs from the resident hens (if you get there early enough) and more. With its meadow, fields, garden and picnic shelter, it’s a lovely place to visit, and during the pandemic, when people desperately needed to get out, they were encouraging them to come out with blankets, picnics and even their dogs and hang out you’re still welcome to do that— but bring a poop bag!
Over the years, they’ve made improvements, adding more greenhouses and a new retail greenhouse much larger than the original one, and expanding the variety of their offerings. But when they open for the season this year on April 2, they’re promising “the most dramatic update in our history.” We’re excited and curious. We do know that their oldest son Ben, who has been working up the road at Quarry Hill Wineries, is coming home to open his own winery at Mulberry Creek, but we don’t know if that’s the surprise.
