Blues guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Robert Lockwood Jr. was a major and influential presence in the Cleveland blues scene for decades. Born on March 27, 1915 in Arkansas and swept up north to Chicago in 1950 in the Great Migration, he connected with that city’s vibrant blues community, performing and/or recording with legends such as Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon and Otis Spann.
A decade later, he moved to Cleveland where he played with his various bands, the All Stars, in bars across the city for the next four and a half decades, performing until a few months before his death in 2006 at the age of 91. There are few area blues musicians who DIDN’T play with him at one point, and more who were influenced by the eclectic style he developed as a result of his diverse background.
Each year that community of players comes together to celebrate him on his birthday, this year the 109th anniversary of his birth. Join Charles DC Carnes and the DC3 , along with featured guests Austin “Walkin’ Cane” Charanghat, Colin Dussault, MC Bob Frank, Gene Schwartz, Benny Mostella Jr and Charlie Christopherson at the Beachland Ballroom for what’s sure to be a smokin’ hot evening of the blues.
