Early Opera by Monteverdi Reimagined at Oberlin

Thu 3/14- Sun 3/17

Monteverdi’s tragic love story has been imagined with a contemporary setting by its director, Stephanie Havey.

See where opera all began! Monteverdi’s setting of the mythical tale of Orpheus and his great love Eurydice is the first masterpiece of theater set to music. In this production, Orfeo’s quest to rescue Eurydice from the Underworld is imagined as a psychological journey in which Orfeo questions the ideals of fidelity and marital bliss in the fight for his bride as his own doubts and fears tear him further away from her.

It is a story of passion and courage, and the complexity of the human spirit.

To add to the complexity and authenticity of the show, maestro Christian Capacoccia is conducting an orchestra of all historical instruments.

As you can see from this advance sneak peek, the show promises to be a sleek and compelling experience.

This fully-staged production of Oberlin Opera Theater will be presented in four performances, March 14 through 16 at 8 PM and March 17 at 2 PM.

Presented with the Oberlin Conservatory historical performance program.
