Columbus and Cleveland Reggae Musicians Pay Tribute to Bob Marley in Kent

Thu 3/28 @ 7:30PM

Reggae music, which emerged from Jamaica in the late 60s blending ska, rocksteady and R&B influences, has many fathers (and, like most musical genres, only a handful of “mothers”) and produced many noted names. But its most dominant figure was Bob Marley who died in 1981 at the age of 36 of a rare cancer. Marley’s tunes comprise the bedrock repertoire of many reggae bands to this day and it seems like celebrations in his honor, mostly held around his February 6 birthday, are continual.

So Columbus’ most prominent reggae band, the Ark Band, is once again celebrating Marley’s life and music, this time at the Kent Stage. The band, founded by two brothers from St Lucia, Terry and Eustace Bobb, has been sharing their version of reggae and its roots and offshoots since 1987. It’s part of their annual Bob Marley tribute tour which they began after spending winter on their home island.

The opening act will be the Ark Band’s vocalist Mark Hunter, dueting with Cleveland’s most beloved reggae artist, Carlos Jones. Get tickets here.
