College Friends Look Back in “It Happened in Atlanta” @ Karamu

Fri 3/8-Sun 3/31

Cleveland writer Michael Oatman’s career as a playwright launched 15 years ago when he earned an MFA in playwriting from Cleveland State University and became playwright-in-residence at Karamu thanks to its former artistic director Terrence Spivey, who fueled many theater careers in Cleveland’s Black community. Since then, his work has been staged in Chicago, New York and Washington D.C. as well as area theaters such as the Cleveland Play House, Cleveland Public Theatre, and the Ingenuity Festival in addition to Karamu.

Now Karamu is staging his latest work, It Happened in Atlanta, directed by Karamu’s CEO Tony Sias. It revolves around a quartet of Clevelanders who head to Atlanta for the 20th college reunion where, the synopsis says, “the dark liquor, weed, and a card game, called For Better or For Worse, come out they are forced to wrestle with their secrets about what happened in Atlanta.” (This week, the busy Oatman is also directing the kickoff production in CPT’s TestFlight series.)

It Happened in Atlanta is recommended for adult audiences only. Get tickets here.
