On February 12, 1924, George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, a composition for solo piano and jazz ensemble, debuted at Aeolian Hall in New York City Exactly 100 years to the day since George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue premiered in New York City. The piece was commissioned by band leader Paul Whiteman, whose ensemble performed it with Gershwin as the pianist. The piece, which combines classical and jazz motifs, has remained popular for 100 years. And there are a lot of celebrations of this anniversary going on this year.
That includes the next concert by the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, taking place at the Maltz Performing Arts Center in University Circle. Cleveland Pops Orchestra music director and conductor Carl Topilow, pianist Jackie Warren and members of the CPO will join CJO (to be fair, there’s musician overlap between the two groups) for this concert along with what they describe “a dazzling array of young string players” for a concert that will also feature new works by CJO members and members of the Cleveland composers guild, inspired by American Modernists of the 1920s.
