Since 2016, Akron Soul Train has been providing short-term “residencies” for area artists — grants to develop specific projects, which it then showcases in its gallery space or another space in partnership with a partner Akron arts group. While many of the dozen or so grants it makes each year are for the visual arts, it’s also supported dance, theater, performance art and writers.
Now it’s hosting a benefit called “Art and Soil,” taking place in its downtown Akron gallery. It’s partnered with Native Roots Inc., a native plants nursery located in Richfield for an event that they say “aims to foster an understanding of the vital relationship between art, soil, and the environment.”
Attendees will learn about how native plants benefit the ecosystem, supporting pollinators and contributing the cycle of nature; they’ll learn what they can do to enhance this cycle by landscaping with native plants instead of exotic invasives that crowd out not just local plants but the insects and wildlife that depend on them. They’ll also get to take home a native plant in an upcycled pot made by Tansy Recycling.
