The Sculpture Center Opens New Shows About Bodily Functions and Societal Ills

Fri 2/23 @ 5-8:30PM

This week the Sculpture Center in University Circle opens a pair of new shows that share the qualities of most of the work it shows. More installation than exhibit, the Sculpture Center presents work that draws on diverse mediums, including nontraditional, everyday materials, to explore often complicated concepts.

In Inured, Cleveland-based Zachary Smoker, who works at the Cleveland Institute of Art, alters mass-produced objects and de-monetized currency “that speaks to our relationship with material culture, the inherently violent, anti-democratic nature of capitalism, and the power structures it employs.”

And Nalani Stolz’s Bodies Still Becoming, part of the Sculpture Center’s Revealed Emerging Artist Series, focuses onphysical changes in the human body using various ordinary materials. “Through her work, she grapples with how it feels to inhabit our bodies as ever-shifting forms,” says the show statement. “The bodily processes in the work draw on the often-gendered experiences of weeping, menstruation, miscarriage, abortion, and pregnancy.”

The shows open with a free reception on Friday February 23 @ 5-8:30pm. The artists will speak about their work from 6:30-7:15pm. It’s free and open to the public.
