The Musical Theater Project’s mission is to explore all aspects of great 20th-century pop songwriting. And its next program, “Legendary Black Singers: Great Broadway Songs,” will look at the how some of the most noted Black vocalists of the era approached this standard repertoire. They point out that Ella Fitzgerald records eight albums of stage and film material by famous composers, all except Duke Ellington white. (A significant percentage of 20th century Broadway and “Great American Songbook” composers were Jewish and either immigrants or the children of immigrants.) Others followed her example. Artists such as Lena Horne, Sarah Vaughan Bobby Short, Louis Armstrong and Nat King Cole made these tunes mainstays of their repertoires.
In this afternoon of music, two noted local Black singers, Evelyn Wright and Nicole Sumlin, both extremely versatile performers, will join jazz pianist Joe Hunter’s trio to explore this repertoire, enhanced by video clips. It takes place at Notre Dame College’s Regina Auditorium. Go here for tickets.
