Two noted local theater creators, Holly Holsinger and Chris Szajbert, who have worked extensively at Cleveland Public Theatre, among other places, have created a theater piece called Ancestra.
The piece explores the history and current state of women’s rights in America. The synopsis tells us that “Inspired by the 1853 National Women’s Rights Convention, Ancestra weaves a historical account of the pioneers for women’s rights with the intimate biography of a contemporary journalism student who writes about reproductive healthcare. When Cora’s methods take an unconventional turn, she is plunged into a crisis through which past and present begin to converge, illuminating a long history of silencing women through intimidation and violence.”
It couldn’t be more relevant and current, as misogynist rightwing anti-abortion activists in the U.S. today are laying plans to strip women of their bodily autonomy entirely, while trying to pretend they aren’t doing it.
Ancestra will be onstage in a Cleveland State University at Playhouse Square’s Outcalt Theatre Thursday 2/22-Sunday 2/25. Get tickets here.
