Ohio Shakespeare Festival Tackles Dickens Novel Onstage

Thu 2/29-Sun 3/17

The Ohio Shakespeare Festival, which performs during the summer on the beautiful outdoor grounds of Stan Hywet Hal and Gardens, doesn’t still strictly to Shakespeare, especially during its indoor winter season at Akron’s Greystone Hall.

That’s where it’s presenting its next production: The Life and Times of Nicholas Nickleby, adapted from the 1839 novel by Charles Dickens. Of course it’s “abridged” — the novel is nearly 1,000 pages long, which would make for a long night (week?) in the theater. As with many Dickens books, it revolved around a young man trying to make his way in the hostile world of 19th-century London and enduring endless ups and downs. OSF is describing their production as “a touching, funny, exhilarating saga,” so apparently they focused more on the ups.

They’ll perform their version Thursdays-Saturdays @ 8pm and Sunday @ 2pm through Sunday March 17. Get tickets here.
