Kent Tap Talk Looks at the Destruction and Potential Restoration of Florida’s Coral Reefs

Tue 2/20 @ 7PM

Tap Talks is a monthly program hosted by Kent’s North Water Brewing, where you can enjoy some local craft beer while learning about an issue, usually related to Kent culture and history.

This month’s topic, presented by Kent resident Pete Mohan, ranges farther afield. He’ll talk about “The Fall and Rise of Florida’s Coral Reefs,” a subject he’s explored since he was Aquarium Curator at SeaWorld Ohio. He continued his conservation work as Director of Animal Operations at the Akron Zoo and although he’s retired he works at the zoo part-time as an advisor on aquatic issues.

“The marine heat wave of 2023 devastated Florida’s coral reefs,” says Mohan. “Record water temperatures further degraded an ecosystem steadily damaged by disease and pollution since the 1970s. At Tap Talks, I’ll discuss the history of problems on the reef, the impact of the recent heat wave, and successes in saving important corals during the heat wave.”

He’ll also present information on current research and conservation efforts working to restore Florida’s reefs and share why doing so is important to all of us, even though there are no coral reefs in northeast Ohio.

Tap Talks are free and open to all.
