The Cleveland Orchestra Honors Dr. King in 44th Annual Free Concert

Once again, for the 44th year, The Cleveland Orchestra will celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr will a special concert at Severance Music Center, and this year, the 60th anniversary of the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The program features works by composers representing groups who fought for their rights, including women, Black and immigrant composers.

It will open with “Lift Every Voice and Sing” aka “the Black National Anthem,” followed by a roster of short pieces including the traditional spiritual “A City Called Heaven,” Mauric Ravel’s Tzigane for violin and orchestra, young Black composer Allison Loggins-Hull’s “Can You See?” and the third movement from James P. Johnson’s Harlem Symphony, among others, concluding with “Amazing Grace.”

Joining the orchestra are the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Chorus, tenor Steven Weems and violinist Amaryn Olmeda. Daniel Reith and William Henry Caldwell conduct.

The concert is free and seating is open, but you must have a ticket, distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Get them here if still available.
