By 1955, the all-for-one patriotism and rosy nostalgia surrounding World War II has dissipated in an environment of suburban middle-class materialism and anti-communist McCarthyism and blacklisting. And to some degree the Gene Kelly/Stanley Donen-directed movie musical of that year, It’s Always Fair Weather, reflected that sea change in the national mood. It revolves around three GIs who make a pledge of eternal friendship immediately after the war while celebrating in a bar, vowing to reunite at the same bar in ten years. But when they do so they find they have nothing in common anymore and after a series of adventures, they part again, likely for good.
With a stellar cast that included Kelly, Dan Daily Michael Kidd, Cyd Charisse and Dolores Gray, the film features a script and lyrics by the noted team of Betty Comden and Adolph Green and music by Andre Previn, as well as memorable dancing by Kelly, of course.
