Composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist Lorenz Hart were Broadway’s premiere songwriting team, writing 28 musicals and more than 500 songs, known for their sparkle and sophistication, before Hart between 1919 and Hart’s death in 1943. Their shows includes On Your Toes, Pal Joey, Babes in Arms, and The Boys from Syracuse, among others. Their songs, which include “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered,” “Where or When,” The Lady Is a Tramp,” “My Funny Valentine,” “Falling in Love with Love” and “Blue Moon,” have been recorded by hundreds of artists, from Ella Fitzgerald to Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan to Doris Day. If they’re less well known that Rodgers subsequent partnership with Oscar Hammerstein II, it’s probably just a matter of our closer proximity to the latter’s more modern blockbusters like The Sound of Music, Oklahoma, Carousel and South Pacific.
The Musical Theater Project and the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra are joining forces to celebrate the music of Rodgers and Hart in “Smooth & Smart …. Rodgers & Hart,” with a one-night-only performance at the Maltz Performing Arts Center. In addition to performances of some of their best tunes, you’ll hear stories behind the tune and the shows, along with photos and video clips. TMTP’s artistic director Bill Rudman and CJO’s music director Paul Ferguson host.
