Ian Maksin was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, where he got his early training in classical cello. Then at age 17 he came to the U.S. to continue his training at the Manhattan School of Music.
Since living here he’s expanded his musical reach in multiple directions, performing as a classical cellist, composing, collaborating with other musicians in different genres, and developing a performance practice that stretches the range of his instrument with looping, layering and processing the sound. He’s also incorporated jazz and world music into a truly expansive sound, which includes singing in 30 languages to go with his far-flung collection of musical influences.
Maksin will perform in Cleveland at the Maltz Performing Art Center as part of his Cellos for Peace tour. He’ll play music from his latest release Amor Renatus (Rebirth of Love) in addition to love songs in Arabic and Hebrew, Farsi and Ladino, Turkish, and Armenian, and Ukrainian and Russian “in an attempt,” he says “to reunite the world and create peace through music.” Part of the proceeds from the show will benefit civilians in areas impacted by war.
