Christa Ebert, aka Uno Lady, made a big impact on the Cleveland art and music scenes during her years in town. Calling herself a “one woman choir,” she makes music by processing and layering her voice with electronic effects pedals, creating a dense and hypnotically dreamy sound. Her off-kilter lyrics add to the strangeness of her impact, as does her constantly changing appearance.
She also keeps changing the formats in which she makes music and the elements she draws on to enhance it. In early 2021, she released an experimental film called Grounded, a series of short pieces intended as a meditative piece to inspire wellness and mindfulness, with the music accompanied by a stream of sounds and images filmed in her backyard as well as drawings and animations by artist Sequioa Bostick and, on one track, words from meditation teacher Latoya Kent.
That was followed by Illicit Hymns, recorded without clearance or permission French and Swiss while she was doing a European artist residency.
She then moved to Maine. And in 2022, she released Le Flux, an album and short film made during a residency in France. She again moved, this time to Alaska, where she’s currently based. Again, she absorbed her surroundings to create the music, inspired by the Alaskan landscape. It reflects and amplifies her long involvement with environmental issues and passion for nature. “The percussion was made by drumming on trees and the beats are comprised of bird calls,” she explains. “These nature sounds pulse along with layers of vocal harmonies.”
She’s returning to Cleveland to show her local fans what she’s been up to, with a performance at the Grog Shop. She’ll share the bill with Orefice Rex, Perfect Pals and Jacob Boarman. Go here for tickets.
