Homelessness is a national problem with many causes, ranging from those who have fallen down the ladder due to substance abuse or mental illness to eviction, domestic abuse and the skyrocketing cost of housing. It’s a situation that the Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless (NEOCH) has been addressing for decades — since 1987 — despite its intractability. And in an area like northeast Ohio with its cold winters, it can be brutal to not have shelter: in late November over a period of two weeks four homeless people died.
Each year, NEOCH hosts a memorial event for those who passed away while homeless, taking place this year at the West Side Catholic Center in Ohio City. All are welcome, and donations are gratefully accepted. Go here to learn what they need. you would like to add names to the memorial list to be read at the event, email ange@neoch.org.
