Brian Kincaid recalls having exactly no aspirations to become the first African American man in Ohio to earn a degree in Enology, the art and study of making wine. He describes an unlikely series of events that led him to the craft of winemaking, culminating in his recent graduation from Kent State University and the launch of his new wine, “The Enologist” on 12.16.23.
“I didn’t know what it was; it all started in 2020, during Covid.” Also known as, that awkward period of 2 ½(ish) years where everyone picked up an obscure hobby to try and avoid thinking about the global pandemic and it didn’t work.
Kincaid honors the late Mansfield Frazier, a CoolCleveland columnist for over ten years, along with his non-profit Neighborhood Solutions, which supported Brian’s education, and Brian credits him for setting the ball in motion regarding everything to come, “He told me, ‘this is something you should do.’”
Now Kincaid is launching his own wine, “The Enologist,” which he says will be the first in a line of signature wines. Brian describes it as “an un-oaked Australian Chardonnay, with notes of apple, pear and pineapple, heightened by a floral crisp finish.”
In collaboration with his wife Maya and her catering company Dressed Tu Kale, Brian has designed a graduation party and wine launch on on December 16 at 5PM at Deep Roots Experience Art Gallery. In addition to the launch of his new wine, the event will feature wine selections from other local wine brands, live charcuterie demonstrations, art, music and a raffle. “The Enologist” wine will be available at the event or for purchase directly, while supplies last.
An in-depth interview with Brian Kincaid will be published in CoolCleveland.
