It’s clear that jazz singer/songwriter Ava Preston is going to have a long, productive career in music. She’s been performing since she was ten and started winning awards, such as Downbeat’s best junior high jazz vocalist in the country, when she was 13.
Now at 18, Preston has the pipes and performance chops, as well as composition skills, of a much more experienced artist. Citing influences such as Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Nina Simone and Ella Fitzgerald, and contemporary artists such as Stevie Nicks, Alanis Morrissette, Esperanza Spaulding and Diana Krall, she demonstrates the sophistication and range of her tastes.
She’s performed at venues such as Nighttown, the BOP STOP, Akron’s Blu Jazz +, and Tri-C JazzFest, and performed with seasoned musicians such as the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra and trumpet player Dominick Farinacci, one of her mentors. Her set this past June at Tri-C Jazz Fest was riveting — for an artist of any age.
Preston will be back at the BOP STOP this week, for a program she’s calling “Jazz Gone Wrong.” She’ll perform an evening of her own music, accompanied by guitarist Tim Picard, pianist Wilson Woods, bassist Ahmed McLemore and drummer Gabe Jones. Everything is likely to go right for Preston.
