DakhaBrakha are a quartet from Kyiv whose name means “give/take” in the old Ukrainian language. They incorporate traditional Ukrainian folk music, global instrumental sounds from Indian, Arabia, Russian and African cultures, and contemporary music into their act, which is also highly theatrical, including costuming and special effects. The ensemble has performed all over the world including Europe, North American and Australia.
Last June they arrived in Cleveland at the height of international concern about the Russian invasion of their country. While focus may have shifted to the clash of Israel and Palestine, Ukraine is still in the midst of a war or the survival of its culture — as artists such as DakhaBrakha remind us with their performances.
Once again they’ll be performing at the Music Box Supper Club, where patrons will be able to order an $18 Ukrainian sampler plate featuring kielbasa, cabbage rolls, potato pancake and roasted apples.
