You know that when you go to Preservation Hall in New Orleans, if you ask the band to play “When the Saints Go Marching In,” you have to pay extra? That’s the iconic tune popularized by Louis Armstrong that everyone associates with the city’s distinctive jazz stylings, which the Preservation Hall Band has been paying tribute to since the 1950s.
Obviously, the personnel have changed since then, but the tradition continues, and they take it on the road with show such as A Creole Christmas, coming to the Kent Stage this week. In it, they play familiar carols and other holiday tunes re-arranged in classic New Orleans style. Will the saints go marching in for Christmas? You never know!
