If you want to find the ultimate in diversity contained in a single arts group, Cleveland Public Theatre is the only one that fits the bill. They don’t do white theater or Black theater or Hispanic theater — they do them all. In addition, their Masrah Cleveland Al-Arabi shares the stories of Arabic-speaking cultures.
Created by CPT’s executive artistic director Raymond Bobgan and Masrah Cleveland Al-Arabi ad directed by Bobgan, their upcoming production The Outstretched Hand reflects the road and inclusive nature of the project, which is open to anyone with Arabic-speaking heritage. The play explores the conflicts that arise from different degrees of connection to that heritage.
“Mira wants to move out of her parent’s home without losing her connection,” the synopsis says. “Third Generation American Sami seeks travels overseas to connect with his roots. Hassan is breaking under the pressure of work, community commitments and his family needs here and overseas. These three young adults push against and pull towards their heritage, communities, and families, as they work towards becoming their full selves.”
The play will have our performances. Opening night includes a pre-show reception at 6:45pm. There will be a dessert reception after Friday’s show, and a pre-show reception prior to Saturday’s. Sunday’s will be followed by a reception and talk-back with the cast.
