Blank Canvas Theatre Mounts Musical Based on Original “Rocky” Film

Fri 12/1-Sat 12/16

How did they ever make a musical of the 1976 Oscar-winning Sylvester Stallone film Rocky? Obviously you need more than that one song, ”Gonna Fly Now.” But somehow Rocky the Musical appeared in 2012 with music by Stephen Flaherty, lyrics by Lynn Aherns and book by Sylvester Stallone and Thomas Meehan. It featured nearly 20 new songs in addition to “Gonna Fly Now.” It debuted on Broadway in 2014 with a modest run.

A not-that-well-known, sort of off-the-wall musical is exactly in the wheelhouse of Cleveland’s small Blank Canvas Theatre, located at 78th Street Studios where it will have its Cleveland premiere, telling the story of the underdog boxer’s courageous challenge to a world champion.

The show runs Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 7pm, through December 16. Get tickets here.
