Veteran northeast Ohio singer/songwriter/guitarist Alex Bevan, who is 73, defies the laws of musical gravity. While the vast majority of his peers who are still performing are reliving their 60s/70s glory days doing Beatles tunes at wineries or playing in classic rock cover bands a sports bars, Bevan is producing a constant stream of new tunes. And his voice has never sounded clearer and stronger and his guitar playing keeps getting more adept. He’s never stopped growing as an artist.
Oh sure, he’ll still play his 70s local radio hit longer the “Skinny Little Boy (from Cleveland, Ohio)” even though he’s no longer skinny, a fact he’ll riff on at shows. Because he’s also as much of an entertainer as one of the area’s finest musicians. But he’s just as likely to pull out a tune he wrote last month.
The songs he sings — all his own, drawn from the hundreds he’s written, recorded and performed during his 50-year career as Cleveland’s premiere folksinger — are vivid and skillfully drawn, sometimes poetic, sometimes hilarious, sometimes relating a detailed narrative of a person, setting or event. With nearly two dozen albums under his belt, no two shows are the same.
When he returns to the Kent Stage, he’ll be drawing from a song list that spans 1071-2023. He’ll get things starts with a mostly acoustic set of tunes from albums such as Springboard (1974), Grand River Lullaby (1978) and Watersongs(1991). Then he’ll bring on some friends to help him perform some tunes from his latest release, Sparrow, and other more band-oriented songs. Drummer Tom Dobeck and keyboard player David Young, both former members of Michael Staley’s Resonators, and bassist Lenny DiCosimo will be joining him.
