Fri 11/17 @ 5-9PM
It’s a busy month at 78th Street Studios’ Third Friday with new openings and lots of changes.
Look for the new show by David King at HEDGE Gallery @ 5-8PM, titled Show and Tell — Domestic Narratives. King’s new series started as a personal statement but grew into a universal reflection on family. “As a father and educator, ‘show and tell’ has always played an important role in my life,” says King. “It was my favorite activity in elementary school. I love sharing my stories and hearing everyone’s family folklore told through objects and experiences”
Meanwhile, E11even2 Gallery gets us in a holiday mood with its group show, The 11.2 Days of Christmas, which will be on view through 12/15. It showcases work by gallery co-owners R!ch Cihlar, Billy Nainiger, and Christina Sadowski. As usual, the work will be diverse, fun and very affordable. On the way there, stop in at painter Eileen Dorsey’s studio, also on the ground floor, because she’s been putting her distinctive landscapes on a variety of affordable items such as tote bags and jigsaw puzzles.
Downstairs on the RAMP level you still have another shot at seeing Eva Kwong’s elegant yet whimsical new sculptures as the show has been extended. And way at the top of the building and way in the back, stop in at the space that used to be Survival Kit Gallery and is now Context Galery, run by Christopher Richards and painter Justin Brennan whose studio is tucked behind it, WAY at the back.
Those who haven’t been to 78th Street Studios in a few months will find some old friends missing —Googie Style, The Byzantine, Yellowcake Shop and Susie Frazier’s nature-based art shop have moved onto new locations and new projects. But new businesses are slated to appear in those spaces soon.
As usual, there’s food on the ground floor from Local West, drinks on the RAMP level from BARneo and vendors from North Coast Promotions in the event spaces, a perfect opportunity to do some holiday shopping. Also scattered around the building, DJ Sunset, Colin John and Randy Sacks will be playing music.
Third Friday is free and open to all, including kids and dogs.
