Few neighborhoods in Greater Cleveland have such a diverse collection of churches as Tremont, a remnant of the days when virtually every block was home to a different ethnic group.
One of the most spectacular is St. Theodosius Orthodox Cathedral on Starkwether just off Professor, now sharing the block with the Affigato Cat Café (!) The church was founded in 1896 by Russian immigrants who settled in Tremont, with the current ornate, multi-domed cathedral opening in 1912.
Learn more about the church and its history when the Tremont History Project leads the first of its free historic church tours, taking place this fall. Each tour in 60-90 minutes and talks about both the building history and the history of the people who occupied it.
RSVP isn’t required but they’d appreciate it. Go here.
Subsequent tours will go to Zion United Church of Christ on West 14th Street on Saturday October 21 @ noon; Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ on West 14th Street on Saturday October 28 @ noon and one of the neighborhood’s other ornate landmarks, Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, on Saturday November 4 @ 2:00pm.
