Riverdog Retreat, five miles outside of Oberlin, Ohio, is a place for reflection, wonder, joy, music and art.
The Accidentals, in their current configuration as a three-piece group of women from Traverse City and Detroit who have recently moved to Nashville, have performed at Riverdog Barn four times prior, and have an avid following in the area. If you call them alt-folk, chamber roots rock, or punk indie country, you’d be close but you’d still miss the casual prepossessing energy, the electric/lo-tech presentation, the down-to-earth but earnest harmonies. Their recent appearance at Riverdog on Sat 10/7/23 was a reason to gather up friends and take some of the few overnight accommodations on the sprawling property.
Artists Terry Speer and wife of many years Deborah Banyas have built and filled with art a 20-acre campus along the Vermilion River with fully stocked rooms to let, art galleries and a kitchen often used to feed the bands they host who are playing their converted barn. Each room is decorated in simple whimsy, with art and furniture hand-built by Terry & Deborah. Look closely and ask a few questions and you’ll learn that the floors and beams and just about everything your eye falls upon were also hand-crafted with loving care.
While in the area, you’d be silly not to visit the historic college town of Oberlin, with excellent bookstores, coffee shops and restaurants. And nearby are outdoor activities such as Common Ground zipline canopy tours and hiking at places like the Augusta-Anne Olsen State Nature Preserve, encouraging you to stay an extra day or two.
