Mexican String Quartet Performs Program That Highlights Latin Music, Art and Culture

Tue 10/24 @ 730PM

Cuarteto Latinoamericano was founded in Mexico in 1982 and since then they’ve toured the world, presenting a repertoire that, among other things, includes more than a hundred pieces they’ve commissioned and premiered, along with those by overlooked composers.

When they perform for Akron’s Tuesday Musical Association at E.J. Thomas Hall in a program called “Mexico, A Musical Journey,” the program will be a celebration of culture and art as well as music. The music they’re scheduled to play will spotlight Latin composers: Ignacio Jerusalen y Stella, Gustavo Campa, Manuel Ponce, Carlos Chavez, Silvestra Revueltas and Gabriela Ortiz.

But there will also be a presentation of paintings by artists such as Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, narrated by Boston University professor emeritus Benjamin Juarez, and a display of artwork by students from Akron Public Schools’ Firestone Community Learning Center inspired by the music
