Maine Folk Band Goldenoak Meditates on Climate Change at Riverdog Barn

Fri 10/20 @ 7:30PM

Summer is really in the rearview mirror now. Lorain County’s Riverdog Barn presents its penultimate show this weekend, with only one remaining after that. Enjoy the fresh-air music while you still can. (There’s covered seating in the barn and tents, but dress warm!)

This weekend you can catch the folkie Maine-based quartet Goldenoak, which revolves around the talents of brother and sister Zak and Lena Kendall on vocals who’ve been singing together since they were kids. (He also plays guitar; she plays clarinet.) They released their debut album Pleasant St. in 2016, when they started to build a significant following outside their family and friends. They’re joined by bassist Mike Knowles and drummer Jackson Cromwell to make music described as “rooted in the natural landscape — their songs move like a stream, meandering and weaving in an original yet grounding direction.”

They followed their debut album with Room to Grow in 2021, which features ten songs that meditate on the fallout of climate change, fueled by Zak’s college studies on human ecology. They describe it as a “call to action.”

“Art isn’t a dumbed-down version of climate issues,” he says in the band’s bio. “There’s a place for music and art in climate conversations, and turning research data into art still does these ideas justice because that’s an important way to convey information and knowledge to push these issues to the forefront and make positive change.”

The bucolic setting of Riverdog Barn seems to mesh perfectly with their concerns about the future of such natural beauty.
