For eleven years, the quarterly magazine CAN Journal has been exhaustively covering the visual arts scene in northeast Ohio. A nonprofit with nearly 100 member galleries, museums, arts organizations and artists, it also sends out a weekly email blast of upcoming art events and maintains a website compiling them.
Now CAN is looking toward protecting all that information for the future, compiling complete sets of the journals in archival boxes lined with handmade, marbled paper created by area artists. It’s forged partnerships with area libraries, including the Cleveland Public Library, Case Western Reserve University Kelvin and Eleanor Smith Library, Artists Archives of the Western Reserve Library, and the Cleveland Institute of Art Library, which will each house one of the sets.
It will be celebrating this effort at the Cleveland Public Library’s Brett Hall which currently houses a large-scale immersive floral installation by British artist Rebecca Louise Law called, appropriately, The Archive.
The event will include food and drink, music and the unveiling of the CAN archive. Get tickets here.
