Ohio played a major role in the pre-Civil War Underground Railroad, which helped fugitive slaves move north to freedom in Canada. It’s estimated that about half of the fleeing slaves moved through the state and as a result, it has many locations tied into the movement. Cleveland’s annual Station Hope event, held at St. John’s Church in Ohio City, focuses on one such location among many.
Kathy Schulz is a retired Ohio librarian who has lived at two major Underground Railroad junctions in Ohio. She recently wrote a book called The Underground Railroad in Ohio, which tells the story about the people and places involved in this early 19th century freedom movement.
She’ll be signing her book on Sunday November 5 at the Learned Owl Book shop in Hudson.
