Artists Archives of the Western Reserve hosts a regular stream of shows at its own facility in University Circle, but it also frequently puts together shows at satellite locations.
It’s got one such show coming up at the new location for it the Bostwick Art Design Initiative galleries at Prospect and East 26th. It’s called Honoring the Land and it features work by three noted northeast Ohio artists, each with connection to Kent State University, whose work is archived at AAWR.
Painter Joseph O’Sickey (1918-2013) was one of artist Lawrence Baker’s teachers at KSU. Brinsley Tyrell, whose large-scale enamel steel works will be on view at the Bostwick, also taught there, somewhat overlapping O’Sickey’s years. Each of the artists addressed the landscape in the work that will be in the show.
“The threads connecting these three artists weave in and out of their works and lives both visually, and in terms of shared experiences and work philosophies,” says AAWR of this show. “For O’Sickey and Tyrrell this includes works that are inspired from their own personal connection to the land they inhabit. For Baker the location itself is not as personally important as the microcosms he depicts close-up views. These overlapping and diverging interpretations make for a compelling exhibition.”
The show opens with a free, public reception on Friday October 4 and will be on view through December 2. Regular viewing hours are Wedensdays 2 noon-6pm after November 1; Fridays @ 10am-2pm; and Saturdays @ noon-4pm after Oct 6.
