Apollo’s Fire, Cleveland’s baroque chamber orchestra, premiered its performance of George Frideric Handel’s oratorio Israel in Egypt in 2017. The ensemble’s founder/artistic director Jeannette Sorrell’s two-hour adaptation of the three-hour work, which evokes plagues, locusts, hail and other disasters prior to the triumphant ending — the crossing of the Red Sea — provides a chance to show off the orchestra’s trumpets, sackbuts, timpani, strings, choir and soloists.
Sorrell and the Apollo’s Singers are headed to New York to perform the piece with the New York Philharmonic. And they are about to release a new CD of the work. They’re celebrating with an one-night-only performance at the Cleveland Institute of Music’s Kulas Hall.
In addition to the Apollo’s singers, sopranos Amanda Forsythe, countertenor Cody Bower, tenor Jacob Perry and baritone Edward Vogel are featured. Concertmaster/assistant artistic director Alan Choo will give a pre-concert talk onstage 45 minutes before the concert starts. The concert will be followed by a reception with the musicians and a CD release party.
