For the past five years, the Akron Art Music and the Akron-Summit County Public Library have been offering anyone with an Ohio library card the chance to enjoy original art in their own home: to check out artworks by local, regional and even international artists from the Art Library, while exposing that work — especially that of local artists — to more people. Art works have been checked out more than a thousand times since the program’s inception.
Among the prominent area artists whose works are available are April Bleakney, Gary Dumm, Arabella Proffer, Dinara Mirtalipova, Amy Casey and Darius Steward, as well as Akron’s Mark Mothersbaugh of DEVO. There are even prints by creative people in other disciplines including Akron jazz pianist Theron Brown, Cleveland author Thrity Umrigar and poet Philip Metres.
In honor of that anniversary, the two organizations are co-hosting an event at the library’s main branch in downtown Akron. It will include music, refreshments, the additional of six new works to the collection, and the recognition of two Art Library artists, Antwoine Washington and Charisse Harris, who’ll talk about the impact of the Art Library on their work.
It’s free and open to the public; registration is required. Go here.
