WordStage Theater Recreates the Wit of the Algonquin Round Table

Sat 9/23 @ 7PM

Cleveland’s WordStage Literary Concerts revolve around the spoken words of great writers and artists of significance, underscored by music with a connection to the words. In their own words, “Dedicated to the presentation of works with special literary, historical and musical merit, our aim is to employ professional local artists whose talents will illuminate the texts and music of some of the most fascinating and remarkable figures in the realms of history and the performing arts.”

The ensemble, led by Tim Tavcar, opens its fall season with “At Wit’s End,” a celebration of New York’s Algonquin Hotel Round Table gatherings from 1919-1929, and four of its key members: Dorothy Parker, Alexander Woollcott, Edna Ferber and Robert Benchley, known for their dazzling repartee, sharp wit and literary acumen.

With Agnes Herrmann as Parker, Paul Slimak as Benchley, Leslie Stager as Ferber and Tim Tavcar as Woollcott, the performance will be accented with the solo piano works of George Gershwin, performed by Patrick Wickliffe.

The performance takes place in the Wright Chapel of the Lakewood Presbyterian Church. For reservations, call Tavcar at 440-857-0717. Cash or check only at the door.
