Photographer Donald Black Jr. Shares Images of Black Bike Riders at CWRU

Thu 9/21 @ 4-8PM

Cleveland photographer Donald Black Jr. expresses his activism through his stunning (mostly) black & white images. His photos of average Black people how them doing ordinary things; that was the point of his recent show A Day No One Will Remember in which children do the ordinary things children do every day.

His new show, Uncontained: They Wanna See Me Fall, brought to Case Western Reserve University’s Kelvin Smith Library by the University’s Social Justice Institute, works the same basic territory from a different angle. The 20 photos in the show revolves around the camaraderie and adventurousness of Black men and boys riding bikes — both pedal and dirt bikes. It suggests that the freedom they seek by riding can also be perceived as threatening and dangerous because of who they are.

The show opens with a free, public reception in the library’s 2nd floor gallery on Thursday September 21, with remarks from the artist at 5:30pm. It will be on view through November Friday 17. Get more information here.
