Artists Archives of the Western Reserve launched its competitive regional biannual juried show in 2014, soliciting entries in multiple mediums from artists in 14 northeastern Ohio counties. The entries are judged by non-regional jurors with strong art-world credentials.

This year, the two jurors, Charlotte Gordon and Mark Chepp, are both artists and educators. Both work at The Southern Art Museum in Portsmouth, Ohio, Gordon as artistic director, Chepp as executive director. They were tasked with the daunting challenge of selecting a predetermined number of pieces — 65 — from the 507 submitted by 159 artists.

“The NewNow offers local artists a unique opportunity to get their work in front of fresh eyes and seeks to rise above the local art politics which can often lead to the same artists being selected for shows repeatedly,” says AAWR executive director Mindy Tousley.

Chepp and Gordon also picked the four award winners: painter Janet Stolle, ceramic sculptor Lynne Lofton, and photographers Larry Kasperek and Cynthia Penter.

The opening reception, held at the Tri-C East gallery where the show is on display, takes place on Thursday September 14 from6-pm. From 6-7pm, attendees can vote on the people’s choice award winner which will be announced at 7:30pm.

The show will be on view through Thursday October 26.
