Near West Theatre Presents Offbeat Musical “The Next Five Years”

Fri 9/15-Sun 9/17

Fri 9/22-Sun 9/24

Jason Robert Brown’s musical The Last Five Years, which debuted in Chicago in 2001 and off-Broadway in 2002, uses a cutesy conceit to tell the story of a five-year romance between Jamie, a novelist on the rise, and Cathy, an actress. The characters don’t interact as Jamie tells the story from beginning to end, while Cathy relates the same story from the end of their marriage to their first meeting.

Near West Theatre is producing the play as its next offering, an atypical presentation for a theater known for large-cast musicals. And for the first time it will be presented in the round in its Blackbox Theater. In addition, unlike the original play, both characters are women.

It runs two weekends only, Friday and Saturday at 7:30pm and Sunday at 2pm. Tickets are “pay what you wish.” Get them here.
