Memorial Bike Ride Honors Woman Killed Downtown & Advocates for Bike Safety

Sat 9/16 @ 8:30-10:30AM

On September 15, 2009, avid cyclist Sylvia Bingham was killed when she was hit by a truck near the corner of East 21st and Prospect while cycling to work. The 22-year-old California woman, a passionate social justice advocate, was in Cleveland for a yearlong stint as an Americorps Vista volunteer.

Friends and family installed a white “ghost bike” at the corner, a symbol of the fight for safer road for cyclists. And each year, they host a memorial ceremony for her there to remind people of that ongoing fight.

All are welcome to join the ride which will assemble at the Bike Box at the corner of West 11th and Fairfield in Tremont and ride to the location starting at 9am. There will be a short memorial service and the placing of the flowers before a group ride back to the starting spot in Tremont.  Learn more abut the event here. Learn more about Sylvia here.
