Puerto Rican author René Marqués wrote the play Los Soles Truncos in 1958, looking at the changes that came to the island’s society in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including the American invasion of Puerto Rico in 1898. It revolves around three upper-class sisters as they suffer a string of losses — parents, wealthy, social position — and isolate themselves inside their home to barricade themselves against those losses.
Cleveland’s LatinUs Theater is presenting the play in its Blackbox Theater at the Pivot Center for Art, Dance and Expression. Kivin Bauzo directs a cast than includes Monica Torres, Sandra Insaurralde and Nydia Castillo.
The play is presented in Spanish with projected English upper titles. It runs three weekend, Thursday-Sunday, through Sunday October 1. To get tickets, go to latinus-theater.
