Cleveland Ballet Opens Its Season with Excerpts from “Carmen” & World Premiere

Fri 9/22-Sat 9/23 @ 7PM

Cleveland Ballet’s first program of its 2023-24 season is packed with goodies for dance lovers. Titled “Carmen & Other Works,” it features selections from one of the company’s most popular productions, based on the opera Carmen and set to music by its composer Georges Bizet. It tells through dance the same story as the opera, revolving around a tempestuous woman whose passions lead to violence.

The program also features the world premiere of a new work called Nocturne, a neoclassical-style work created by the company’s founder/director Gladisa Guadaloupe. It will be danced to music by Frédéric Chopin performed live by pianist Gerardo Teissonnière.

“The idea was straightforward: begin with a base of classical music composed by Frédéric Chopin and allow the choreography to develop naturally based on the Cleveland Ballet company dancers,” says the company’s press release. “With a spectacular Steinway grand piano placed center stage, the audience will experience stunning movement that shows fluidity and artistry combined with strength and athleticism through complex partnering.”

Also featured is Pas de Dix, in which five couples dance to music from Alexander Glazunov’s ballet Raymonda.

The two performances take place at Playhouse Square’s Connor Palace Theatre. Go here for tickets.
