Cleveland Artist Corrie Slawson Shows New Works on Paper at Shaheen Gallery

Fri 9/8 @ 5-7:30PM

Cleveland artist Corrie Slawson’s work is a vibrant cacophony of images, ideas and mediums that’s hard to describe but makes a strong impact when viewed. Painting, drawing, printmaking and collage all figure into her finished pieces which, according to her bio “engage with a matrix of social, political, and cultural concerns that are often difficult to resolve. Centering on such issues as justice and human rights, land-use, climate change, environmental degradation, and the current-day impacts of European Colonialism, Slawson approaches the notions of place, home, and community as if they were constructed, physical bodies—sometimes inflamed and falling apart, other times resilient and growing.”

Whew. It’s a lot. But the ambitious artist’s pieces aren’t inaccessible or off-putting. And her new show, Future dithering that folds and unfolds the past, at the Shaheen Contemporary and Modern Art Gallery in Beachwood, will feature her recent works on paper, created between 2021 and this year, giving viewers the chance to take as much of those concerns as they can handle. It opens with a free public reception on Friday September 8; it will be on view through Wednesday November 22.
