City Club Launches New Era in New Home with Mayors of Cleveland & Cincinnati

Fri 9/15 @ 11:30AM

The big news from the City Club of Cleveland, founded in 1912, is its move — from an upper floor of a building off Euclid Avenue just west of East 9th Street to its new home in Playhouse Square. Not a long distance, but a new era!

Its first era launched back in 1912 with a forum featuring Cleveland Mayor Newton D. Baker, as well as the mayors of Cincinnati and Toledo, talking about urban challenges and solutions. Now its first official forum at the new location will feature current Cleveland mayor Justin Bibb and Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval, both young, up-and-coming leaders bringing fresh blood to their respective cities. (Bibb is 36; Pureval is 41.)

They’ll talk about the contemporary challenges and potential solutions facing urban areas today, a time radically different from 1912. Then, more than 50% of the country’s population lived in rural areas; today it’s less than 18%, while more than 80% lives in urban areas. And while much of that is suburban, the well-being of suburbs is entwined with that of their urban core.

And back then, both Cleveland and Cincinnati had larger populations than now, Cleveland dramatically (nearly 200,000 more) and Cincinnati somewhat. But most of Cuyahoga County lived within city limits; that was true of Hamilton County (Cincinnati) as well. So Bibb and Pureval are dealing with a new set of challenges.

While the forum is sold out, of course, it will be livestreamed starting at noon at the City Club’s website. And you can ask question: tweet @TheCityClub or text 330-541-5794.
