Anyone who has been following the discussion surrounding Cuyahoga County’s arts tax and how much of it reaches actual artists knows that there’s been a lot of controversy around how its allocated, how much goes to artists and how it’s distributed. (“Artist” refers to creatives in any aspect of the arts, not just visual artists.)
Cuyahoga Arts and Culture, the group created to set the guidelines for distribution, has allocated funding to the nonprofit, arts council-like Assembly for the Arts to hold listening sessions around the Support for Artist grants, open to anyone who feels they have a stake in the issue.
One such session has already occurred, and there’ll be another virtual discussion this week via Zoom on Wednesday September 27. They’ll be looking for people’s experiences and feedback on “merit-based awards, relief funds, fellowships, funding for specific projects or ideas, and grant opportunities” with the hope that programs that go to individual artists in the county can be expanded.
The conversation will be facilitated by Dr. Brea Heidelberg. Register here. Future live listening sessions will be held at Ingenuity Labs (October 18) and Tremont’s Kaiser Gallery (October 21).
