Akron Art Museum Evening Highlights Two Local Artists with Current Shows

Thu 9/14 @ 6-9PM

While its current blockbuster Keith Haring exhibition —which runs for just a few more weeks — has understandably been garnering most of the attention, there are some other interesting things going on at the Akron Art Museum, focusing on a pair of northeast Ohio artists.

Barbara Stanczak’s career as an artist/sculpture goes back more than 60 years. Her Spirit & Matter shows how her creative vision developed through the use of the nature materials — stone and wood — she favors in her work.

Amanda D. King is half Stanczak’s age but has amassed an impressive body of work as well as a track record of community-oriented activism and education through the arts.  Her show Locusts is more personal. Motivated by her grandfather’s death during the COVID pandemic, she looks at how memory impacts grief, history and spirituality.

The museum will be hosting an evening devoted to the two artists. AT 6:30 its senior curator Jeff Katzin will lead a conversation with Stanczak and King, followed at 7:15 by a performance by Jaron LeGrair and Marquis Brown. The event, including gallery access, is free and there’ll be a cash bar and light food available.
