Tuba Skinny Brings New Orleans Street Sounds to the Music Box

Tue 9/5 @ 7:30PM

There’s nothing like New Orleans-style music, which typically revolves heavily around horns and percussion, to lift one’s spirits: its music is clearly one of the things that gives the place its nickname “the city that care forgot,” despite its many challenges.

The eight-piece, jazz-based ensemble Tuba Skinny, which started as a New Orleans street band has been touring the sound of its home town around the world for more than a decade and released more than a dozen albums. Like many New Orleans bands, its music has collected many influences as it’s rolled along, including ragtime, blues, R&B, string-band music and jug band music, becoming truly “Americana.” Its distinctive instrumental lineup includes tuba, clarinet, trombone, cornet, banjo, washboard, bass drum and guitar, lending all of that a unique sound.

The band was booked for a show at the Music Box Supper Club on Wednesday September 6, which sold out quickly. So they’ll be playing another on Tuesday September 5. Grab your tickets here. Club opens for dinner at 5:30 if you want to come eat.
