When the Cleveland Orchestra is promoting a program called “Mozart in the Meadows,” you know it’s the height of summer.
But they’ve actually added a twist to the old reliable Mozart standards on a program that’s actually headlined by Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4 (“Italian”), a work influenced by Mozart. The Mozart pieces are his Clarinet Concerto, with the orchestra’s principal clarinetist Afendi Yusuf in the solo part, and the overture to his beloved opera The Marriage of Figaro.
But here’s the sly kicker: also on the program is the Suite from Figaro Gets a Divorce, from the 2016 opera of that name by Russian-born British composer Elena Langer, a smart-alecky response to the Mozart opera. Nicholas McGegan conducts.
